Introduction

I am Yuezi Wu, an energy system engineering PhD student studying in Prof. Vijay Modi's Sustainable Engineering Lab at Columbia University. I am interested in and working on building the energy system models of integrating renewable energy, storage, transmission, and demand electrification, which may help to understand the pathway to the low-carbon future.

This site shows a part of my projects, my understanding, my stories.

My Journey

Swimming in energy engineering pool for 6 years.

In 2014 (sophomore year), I determined my undergraduate major as Energy & Environment System Engineering at Zhejiang University. It's the starting point for me to step into the energy industry. I learned a lot of courses designed for the thermal engineer and get my BS degree in 2017. Then, I started my master's degree in mechanical engineering at Columbia University, continuing the energy system track. During my master's period, I was getting familiar with the energy system models integrated engineering consideration with data science under the guidance from Prof. Vijay Modi and Dr. Michael Waite. After one year of working experience in the lab, I am pursuing a PhD degree at Columbia University now.

Besides building the low-carbon energy system models, I studied the dual sources heating system combining natural gas and electric heat pump in the lab for nearly a year. And I taste broadly in these 5 years, including carbon emission market, carbon capture and storage, nano-scale heat transfer, PV Panel life-cycle analysis, air purifier manufacturing, solar thermal energy system, underground thermal storage system...

My Understanding of My Responsibility

It’s the fact that the climate target is not easy to achieve. It’s unrealistic to expect everybody to realize the severity of climate change and make some change, and it’s also not immoral to limit and command people. Thus, on the other side, it’s more reasonable for people in energy industrial to devote more to solve the problems with available technology and commercial competitive plans. As an energy engineering student, I have the responsibility to apply my skills to the vehicle of driving us to the low-carbon sustainable future.
